下文为王建飞博士提供的Harry Rozmiarek博士参与中国实验动物科技工作的一些重要活动及其生平介绍,以示纪念。
Dr. Harry Rozmiarek, D.V.M, Ph. D was an old friend of many our Chinese laboratory animal science colleagues including Dr. Ruishan Liu. He helped train many Chinese laboratory animal scientists. Dr. Rozmiarek helped and received many our Chinese colleagues to attend AALAS meeting and to visit many US animal organizations. He even hosted many our Chinese colleagues and friends in his house. He had a great passion and attachment to help develop modern Chinese laboratory animal sciences. Early in 1989, when Chinese laboratory animal science was about to take off, Dr. Rozmiarek lectured laboratory animal sciences with my two other mentors Drs. Margaret Landi and CK Hsu in Beijing Agricultural University. He encouraged me to translate the 6th edition of Guide for Laboratory Animal Care and Use into Chinese in 1996. During my 4 years training in laboratory animal medicine, Dr. Rozmiarek took me to tour many US animal facilities, introduced me to many US prominent laboratory animal scientists, and invited me to conduct AAALAC site visit for organizations such as Ex Mobil, he taught me much animal clinical, research, and testing experience. In 2002, Dr. Rozmiarek traveled to China and promoted AAALAC notion and practice in Shanghai International Symposium on Laboratory Animal Sciences. He was invited to lecture at the School of Veterinary Medicine in Nanjing Agricultural University in 2002. During his 2002 trip in China, Dr. Rozmiarek also performed a pre evaluation for AAALC site visit for Guangzhou General Pharmaceutical Research Institute which is now accredited. He was so amazed rapid advancement of Chinese laboratory animal sciences that he sent his writing to then journal of Shanghai Laboratory Animal Sciences (now the Laboratory Animals & Comparative Medicine) to praise our progress in 2002. Dr. Rozmiarek was invited to give the talk on quality laboratory animal care and use at the annual meeting for Chinese Association of Laboratory Animals in Hangzhou In 2004,. Since 1996, he served as an oversea editor for the Journal of Laboratory Animals & Comparative Medicine, contributed greatly to the journal quality improvement.
Dr. Rozmiarek (born March 27, 1939 in Pulaski, Wisconsin) was a noted veterinarian, academic, and laboratory animal care specialist. Dr. Rozmiarek graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1962 with a veterinary degree. He joined the United States Army and was assigned as an attending army veterinarian at Fort Meyer, Virginia. Among his duties, Dr. Rozmiarek attended to Black Jack, the famous riderless horse in the funeral of President John F. Kennedy. He also consulted on the health of the Kennedy family dog and cared for some Irish deer that had been a gift to Kennedy from the people of Ireland. The remainder of his 20-year military career took him to Thailand where he conducted infectious disease research with the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO). And he spent several years as director of The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) in Frederick, Maryland. He retired from the Army in 1983 with the rank of Colonel. In 1983 he went to The Ohio State University where he served as Professor of Laboratory Animal Medicine and Director of University Laboratory Animal Resources through 1986.
His contributions to the wider laboratory animal science community were many. Dr. Rozmiarek joined the University of Pennsylvania in 1987 as professor of Laboratory Animal Medicine and director of University Laboratory Animal Resources. He had also served as University Veterinarian and Associate Director of the Office of Regulatory Affairs and as director of postdoctoral residency training for veterinarians in laboratory animal medicine from 1987-2007. The recipient of numerous grants for facilities improvement, training, and research, he was a member of the Scientific Consultants Group for Malaria Research of the Agency for International Development (USAID). In 2004 he was appointed by the National Research Council (ILAR) as the national member and represented the United States on the International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS) and was elected to the ICLAS Governing Board in 2007. Dr. Rozmiarek's contributions and leadership in laboratory animal medicine were recognized by his election as AALAS National president in 1983, president of the American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners in 1992, president of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) in 1997, and numerous other positions of leadership in these and other organizations. He was awarded the AALAS Griffin Award in 1995 and the Charles River Prize of the American Veterinary Medical Association in 1996, was appointed a Fulbright Scholar and studied at the University of Cambridge for the 2002-2003 year, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association in 2009. In 2013, he received Bennett J. Cohen Award which recognizes outstanding individuals who have provided exceptional service and significant contributions to AAALAC International, and have demonstrated a strong and abiding commitment to advancing science through the promotion of the highest standards of laboratory animal care in research, testing, and education. Dr. Rozmiarek was author of more than 60 scientific publications and presentations and was co-recipient of the AALAS Research Award in 1980. He published extensively in the fields of immunology, toxicology, virology and infectious disease, and laboratory animal management and husbandry. He was a member of the Editorial Committees for the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (1995) and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee Guidebook (1992 and 2002). He had served on the Editorial Advisory Committee and Scientific Review Board for the AALAS Contemporary Topics Journal, as Editor Emeritus for the Shanghai Laboratory Animal Science Journal, and referee for numerous other scientific journals. He currently serves as Professor Emeritus and Director for the University of Pennsylvania and Fox Chase Cancer Center
Dr. Rozmiarek made enormous and enduring contributions to laboratory animal sciences worldwide over more than four decades. He was such a figure present all LAS events. Dr. Rozmiarek always cared for Chinese laboratory animal sciences development. He was proud of our accomplishment in laboratory animal sciences. He will be remembered by our Chinese colleagues.
